According to an ethnological study conducted in the 1980s, only eight people at that time were still able to speak this language. Original image from Google Developers documentation.At the beginning of the project Google provided its own protocol and API for registering actions and inputs. They also encouraged developers to use a JavaScript SDK acting as a wrapper for the API. At busuu we’re mainly a PHP shop, but in that case we had perfectly good excuse to do something a bit different so we picked Node.js for the job. As it turned out, the SDK stopped being a requirement soon after which meant our excuse for using Node.js was gone… But by this point we were well underway with the development and kept going.

We started developing our agent (“agent” is the name given to apps built with API.AI) when the Assistant platform was still evolving quickly. While it sometimes was a bit frustrating to develop against a moving target, it was also pretty interesting to see their process in action for iterating and adding features to the platform. Busuu offers compact, effective courses designed by language experts in 13 different languages. Learn French, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. In 2016, researchers from City University of New York and the University of South Carolina conducted a study into the efficacy of Busuu's courses.

While we didn’t end up publishing the chat bot, it still got us very excited about the possibilities of a more interactive learning experience. Later in 2016, Busuu worked with a senior lecturer at The Open University to find out about the behaviour of language learners on the platform. The results showed 82% of Busuu learners confirmed that Busuu helped to improve their language learning. I used Busuu 3 years ago while traveling and I loved it. I used it on flights and all over the place by downloading lessons and working on them as I traveled.
